The High Chaparral traced the adventures of the Cannon family in their struggle to maintain a cattle ranch in the rugged Arizona desert. Set in the 1870′s, survival meant a fight against the elements as well as renegade Indians and outlaws. John Cannon dreamed of building a life of peace and prosperity in cooperation with the native Apache. Within days of arriving in their new home, the army warned them off, Apaches attacked, and John found he had a hostile neighbor, Don Sebastian Montoya, who claimed the High Chaparral land as his own. The series tells the story of how the Cannons and Montoyas joined forces to carve a new home from the land.
