Preserving and promoting the spirit and traditions
of the Old West!

sass-marshal-logo-color-0011.gif

Old Tucson Studios and SASS – a match made in movie heaven!
Old Tucson Studios, home to more than 300 movies and shows, has been steeped in the Hollywood western tradition since 1939.  Cowboy Action Shooting was created in 1981 by Harper Creigh an avid shooter who, while watching old westerns, was inspired to create a shooting match using western-type guns.

Today’s Single Action Shooting Society, an international organization, stages shooting matches and endorses matches conducted by affiliate clubs. In the spirit of the Old West, SASS match participants sport shooting aliases, costumes, and firearms reflective of the period.

Old Tucson Studios brings these two iconic western traditions together by welcoming current SASS members with free admission* when they comply with following guidelines:

1.  Members must be dressed in period costume with a SASS badge and must
present a current SASS ID card.

2.  No live ammunition will be allowed in the Park. Dummy rounds in gun belts
will be allowed provided that the primers are dimpled and/or the brass is
      drilled.

3.  Guns will be allowed provided that they are unloaded. (Guns will be
      safety checked at the gate).

4.  No alcohol may be consumed by a SASS member wearing firearms.

5.  SASS rules apply.

So come out and spend a day in the Old West, complete with gunfights and stunt shows, dance hall musicals, and rides for the kids. Pan for gold, tour our movie museum and chow down on authentic chuckwagon barbecue. It’s a fun-filled day at one of the west’s most famous and still-active movie locations.  Old Tucson Studios – Celebrating 70 years of Western Movie Magic

Western Music Sampler Series – Apr 26

apr-26-jon-messenger

Our Western Music Sampler Series concludes with a 1:00 p.m. performance by Arizona singer/songwriter Jon Messenger. Jon brings to his audiences a hearty stew concocted from the influences of an eclectic musical background. Influenced by everything he’s heard, he likes to say, “I play what I can, and what I can’t, I want to learn.” Jon’s original Folk and Western tunes have been well received by audiences at festivals and gatherings throughout the West, and these songs reflect Jon’s love of the West and the American Cowboy.

Bringing a unique approach to today’s Cowboy and Western Music, Jon’s vocal and acoustic guitar stylings blend together to bring to all his audiences a haunting and authentic portrait of cowboy life, past and present. Interspersed with the fine Western Music are some wonderful selections of Cowboy Poetry, some by traditional authors, and some original poems from Jon’s pen.

Jon has been playing at gatherings, festivals, churches, parties, dinners, etc., etc., for a long time…almost exclusively performing Western Music around the southwest and points east, west and north of Sierra Vista, Arizona for nearly fifteen years with a smattering of bluegrass and western swing in the between spots. He was a founding member of the Western trio, Rimfire, and played guitar for the very popular Raw Deal Bluegrass Band. An ongoing collaboration with Jeanne Cahill and Jerome Campbell … they of Oklahoma’s Call of the West, in 2004 produced the recording Ponydance…the recording features ten original tunes and two treatments of old and new classics…the title tune was also recorded by award winning Western singer-songwriter Kip Calahan, and Ponydance was among the top five nominees for the Western Music Association’s 2004 Song of the Year. The trio of musicians also collaborated on Jon’s latest release, entitled Spirits. The tune Spirits of Truth, which inspired the album title, was nominated for Song of the Year by the WMA in 2005, and the recording was also among the top five nominees for Traditional Album of the Year.

The love and appreciation of the Western state of mind is in every tune he writes; Jon has earned his spurs among true cowboy poets and musicians. He writes some of the most hauntingly beautiful songs of our time and has found a way to express insights into the livestock community that most people simply overlook. He’s become an integral part of the Western Music community, and is well respected as a performer and songwriter by all.

Jon served four years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Western Music Association; three years of which were served as the President of the Board of Directors. After a brief reprieve, he has found himself once again occupying a seat on the WMA Board, and is currently serving as the President of the Board of Directors.  He is also a member of the WMA Advisory Board.

With an eye on the future, Jon’s presentations of Western song and verse are dedicated to the fierce spirit of liberty exemplified by the ranching community and the love of self-sufficient freedom.

Katy Creek Band, Western performers from Arizona grace the Grand Palace Saloon stage at 1:00 p.m. Wes & Nancy Ruybal perform Western Americana, Cowboy Poetry and Gospel.  With a pure uncomplicated style, they present renditions and recitations about the American West and it’s people from the 1800’s to the modern day working cowboy. Wes grew up a horseback, cowboying with his father and brothers.  His family’s cowboy heritage dates back to the settling of the San Luis Valley in Colorado.  Wes’s poetry and songs reflect his many experiences as a working cowboy, including the folks he’s met and places he’s worked. Nancy, a country girl from Ohio, began writing and performing folk music at age fourteen. When they came together, it was only natural their music and poetry would speak of our great American Heritage, the settling of the West and Wes’s own cowboy experiences in the modern world.   A Katy Creek concert is an exciting adventure of life and love, laughter and tears with a dash of murder, mayhem and mystery you won’t want to miss.  Katy Creek is the name of a creek running through our place at Table Top National Wilderness.  Watch for The Legend of Katy Creek on our next project!

  Reviews

Marvin O’Dell,  Around the Campfire HeartlandPublicRadio.org  2007  Western Music Association  Disc Jockey of the Year:  Katy Creek, western performers from Arizona, have begun to build a solid reputation for putting on finely tuned performances… Nancy’s heartfelt vocals place her as the band’s centerpiece.  After a song finds its way through her wonderful vibrato to your ears, you are completely satisfied.  Her lead and rhythm guitar work are noteworthy and Nancy has become a force to be reckoned with as a songwriter

Wes Ruybal evidences a writer who has lived the cowboy life – the REAL cowboy life.  This isn’t  “stuff we already know”, as Billy Joe Shaver wrote, from watching television and reading books.  This is stuff that’s been lived.  It’s authoritative.  …….

Ralph and Tamara of Ralph’s Back Porch Radio gave this review:  I’ve heard the Texas breezes play in the tops of tall oak trees.  I have heard the laughter of people enjoying a good song. I have heard a child at play.  All these sound make me smile and all these sounds are good, and now, right there amongst these wonderful sounds I have heard a band called Katy Creek make beautiful music for the heart and soul.

Dee Strickland Johnson “Buckshot Dot”  Academy of Western Artists Female Cowboy Poet of the Year:    A fresh new sound I find completely charming. Katy Creeks’ Autumn’s On Its Way is a compelling album and Katy Creek, outstanding !

March 29, 2009

mar-29-mike-moutoux-pic Mike Moutoux is the featured artist on March 29 at 1:00 p.m.  He lives north of Silver City, New Mexico and works on a large ranch south of town. At the ranch, most work is done on horseback using traditional methods.   Cattle are worked with horses and ropes just as they were one hundred years ago. “The work out here is tough and the weather in Southwest New Mexico can get pretty hot, but the scenery is fantastic. Most of the time we can see two or three different mountain ranges depending on where we are. I come home most days pretty tired but with a lot stories about things that happened that day and what sorts of things we saw.”

Mike has been performing cowboy poetry and music since 2002 and is an audience favorite wherever he goes. Known as “New Mexico’s Most Enchanting Cowboy” he strives to take his listeners to places and feelings they may not get to any other way. “I want to put them as close to being in the saddle as words and music allow-and at the same time leave ‘em laughing.” he says. In 2006, Mike was nominated for “Cowboy Poet of the Year” with the Western Music Association and performed at their festival in Albuquerque. In 2007, his CD, Headin’ Home was nominated for “Cowboy Poetry CD” of the Year.

Mike has performed at schools and festivals across the country including the Cochise Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering In Sierra Vista, AZ, The Durango Cowboy Gathering in Durango CO, The Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering in Prescott, AZ, and Rex Allen Days in Willcox, AZ. One of his poems, “Spirits Still Remain”, has been archived by the National Park System in a time capsule after he performed it for the 100th Anniversary of the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument.

You can find him on the web at www.enchantingcowboy.com. There you’ll find photos, poems, notes from the ranch, his schedule, music and interviews.
